Be a Video Game Tester
Andres Garcia | Submitted On December 15, 2007 on 06/27/2015 at 8:59pm (UTC)
Becoming a video game tester sounds fun, doesn't it? Those that play and test games know that it's an excellent job or a great career choice. It's unfortunate that a lot of gamers think or somehow believe being paid to do this simply cannot happen. Just the opposite, there are many people that play games, just like us, doing this type of work as a full blown career with benefits.

Having a career as a video game tester can be really fun, but it's important to note that this is also a real job, with real money making opportunities. It may not be for everyone, but that's obviously up to each individual. At first glance, being a tester may sound like it's "all fun and games", which it can be, but it also requires more than just playing a game.

Some examples might be having to play the same levels many times over just to identify all the different bugs that are presented within the game. So there is "work" involved. That being said, the majority of people that are in this business do tend to be very happy with their jobs. Of course, they do get to play the hottest games on the market in addition to see what the future holds for the industry - in some cases, days, months, or even years before the general public does.

Many known designers, programmers, etc, in the industry actually started as a video game tester before getting the position that they have today. So it's also an excellent way for people to get their foot in the door for those interested in becoming a game designer, programmer, etc. Contacts are everything, so meeting the right people is very important, thus becoming a video game tester being a great way to do that.

Andre Garcia follows trends within the video game industry, and has been involved with the industry for many years. Check out Become A Video Game Tester @ http://bit.ly/1LxjmCE

Playing Video Games That Offer a Real Challenge
Simon Barnett | Submitted On October 04, 2013 on 06/23/2015 at 10:47pm (UTC)
It always seems to me to be a real disappointment, when I find a game that doesn't live up to the associated hype. One of the real difficulties that I have is with games that have been produced with the help of significant financial backing, but that simply don't seem to deliver.

It's often the case that such games are associated with movies or television shows. In these cases, I guess that the executives are relying on the fact that there is already a potential audience available. Those who watch the movies may be more likely to buy the games.

Unfortunately, it can sometimes be the case that rather too much money is spent on creating games that look good, rather than having that focus on whether they are fun to play. It may be entertaining to have video games experiences that replicate what you have seen at the movies, but how many hours of enjoyment will you really get?

My own suggestion would be that it's often best to avoid those games that are associated with big marketing campaigns. You often find out about the best games in a rather more organic manner, without having to rely on numerous posters and television adverts. Instead, you find out about them from friends and family members.

It helps, of course, if you have friends and members of your family who enjoy similar games to you. That's usually a fairly decent indicator of the fact that they will make informed recommendations. If you enjoy playing sports games, for example, then there's a strong chance that you'll want to find out about more within that same genre.

For my own part, I've often been surprised to find that I enjoy playing games where the content doesn't seem particularly relevant to my own interests. Indeed, this is a situation that's cropped up at fairly regular intervals. It's led me to draw a number of conclusions, which I'd like to share with you right now.

Firstly, despite much of the talk about how games look, the reality is that it's the challenging of playing them that always makes the real difference. Nothing else seems to matter much by comparison. Even if I'm not interested in fishing, to take an extreme example, that's not to say that I wouldn't enjoy a game that covers that subject and that has been well made.

There are times when it's possible to learn more about a specific subject by playing relevant games. What this means is that it's important to be open to opportunities that may present themselves. It's always possible to find out more about a range of subjects. If that occurs within the context of playing an interesting and challenging video game, then this seems to me to be a very good thing.

Think carefully about what a game really offers and whether it meets your own gaming requirements. Don't be confused by intelligent marketing techniques.

You can get gaming hints and tips online, as discussed by Simon Barnett. This article may be used by any website publisher, though this resource box must always be included in full.

Effects of Video Games on Heart Rate
Solomon M Magawi | Submitted On February 13, 2014 on 06/23/2015 at 10:45pm (UTC)
Video games have been in the market for the last 35 years. They are a unique form of leisure because they encourage players to be part of the game's characters. This, however, has both positive and negative effects on the player. Several studies have been published that explore the effects of video games on heart rate.

In this article, I have tried to summarize the research conducted into the effects of video games on individual's heart rate.

In a study conducted by the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University, it has been found that playing violent video games affects heart rate variability not only during game play but also when you are sleeping at night. A group of boys, aged between 13 and 15, were told to play two different games in the evening, one focused on aggression while the other had no violent features.

Fifteen boys were exposed to violent video gaming, playing for no less than three hours a day. The remaining fifteen were asked to play nonviolent cartoon games - no more than one hour per day. The boys played the games at their homes, on two evenings.

Heart rates were observed during the game play and also while sleeping. The study seems to show that effects of gaming don't just stop when you switch off your system, but they have a continuous psychological impact without the player even being aware of it.

While the boys were sleeping later that night, boys that were exposed to highly violent games had faster heart rates compared to the night after playing nonviolent games. Boys who were exposed to violent games also reported poor quality of sleep on the night after playing an aggressive game. They also reported increased feelings of sadness. The violent game seems to have elicited more nervousness and stress at bedtime.

This suggests that frequent exposure to violent computer games not only increases stress and aggressive behaviour, but also increases anti-social behaviours. Other studies have also indicated that violent video games can cause an adrenaline response. In other words, they can affect your blood pressure, breathing rate and pain tolerance.

Violent video games usually tend to be more thrilling and obsessing than their more peaceful counterparts. As a result, they are bound to see heart rates rise. It could also be the increased excitement level which is causing increased anxiety. However, not all individuals may be affected by exposure to violent computer games, but most individuals are affected.

It's Time to Work As a Game Tester!
Claston Perez | Submitted On May 03, 2014 on 06/23/2015 at 10:43pm (UTC)
Game testing, or more broadly, quality assurance testing, is the process of ironing out the kinks in a video game prior to its final release to the market. Generally speaking, before any video game for any console is released to the market, it has to undergo continuous bug tracking and repair.

The bug-tracking phase is performed by quality assurance personnel, or game testers. Game testers are always separate from the team that codes or programs the game itself.

A game tester may not know how to code, but his expertise is valued because he has the ability to observe, monitor, and record the bugs that emerge when gaming code is put to the final test: actual gameplay. Sure, a game tester may be dealing with an object that is used for entertainment and personal enjoyment.

However, the job itself is anything but. This is not to say that every gaming studio is horrible when it comes to quality assurance. However, you have to keep in mind that, like other employees, game testers may be subjected to certain pressures like deadlines.

Additionally, companies and game studios expect game testers to be able to produce bug reports on a regular basis. If you are a game tester and you have submitted only two bug reports in all of your months of stay in the company, don't expect gleaming praise from your superiors.

Here are some more important reminders that will keep you afloat in the game testing industry:

1. Establish sustainable working routines. The life of a game tester is not very glamorous, and you are not there so that the game studio or company can keep you entertained or excited. In terms of personal motivation and efficiency, you have to create those things for yourself.

In short - don't let the routine nature of your job get the best of you. If you are working on a PC game, the amount of time needed to iron out most of the bugs will take a longer period of time compared to the time needed to release a bug-free version of a mobile game.

2. Learn to stick to the specific details and requirements. These requirements can change from day to day, depending on what you are working on at the present time.

This is the main reason why it can be difficult to learn game testing by just reading programming languages and by playing even more video games. It's not about those things at all. The process of identifying bugs and documenting these bugs is distinct from just playing a game.

3. Improve your writing and documenting skills as much as possible! When you find bugs in the game that you are working on, it is improbable that you can just run to some programmer and tell him about it.

If this was the system that companies used, no game would get out on time. It just takes too much time and the back-and-forth interaction between quality assurance and programming will be far too clunky.

That's why you need to be excellent with your written communication skills, because that is how you will be communicating with the programming department. Without good writing skills, you will not flourish in this field at all.

Video Games and Swearing
Barbara A Kubica | Submitted On June 03, 2014 on 06/23/2015 at 10:40pm (UTC)
Parents worry about their children hearing swear words due to the way it may affect them. Children are increasingly exposed to aggressive situations due to the proliferation of various types of media, while video games are available on more platforms. Video games in particular provide opportunities for violent confrontations. Many video games contain swear words that can be absorbed into a young psyche. The fear of the effect it can have on the behavior of a young person can be unsettling for parents. Verbal aggression is associated with fighting, but the extent of its influence is not known. Behavioral changes as a result of such languages are unwanted.

Parents don't know how to prevent behavioral problems in their kids when they accidentally hear swearing. Although rude words accompany violence, they may not necessarily provoke others to respond with brutality. Swearing as such is considered to be an expression of frustration that may also lead to the elevation of stress levels. It has both cathartic effect through tension release, but also various elements of retaliation as well as insult. Even though swearing is associated with cruelty, it rarely leads to violence, as the expression of anger can unburden an individual. According to the research, rude words can elevate blood pressure, and many entertainers find them handy.

Swearing that is used to assault others or intimidate is part of offensive outbursts. Children initially replicate certain phrases thoughtlessly mostly due to the reaction they cause. They try them for the effect they may have without realizing any consequences.

It may not be enough to monitor whether your kids have access to games. It is always prudent to find out if the game is appropriate, as some are made for adults rather than children. It is not possible to prevent children from watching violent video games with their friends, but it is essential to communicate the effect of their experiences of such games. They can even be exposed to swear words they can learn even from their friends. Some games have controls monitoring violence and swear words. It may be beneficial to provide guidance when children learn offensive language for the first time.

Video games tend to have an increasingly violent content with sexually explicit scenes. They are often appealing due to challenges players want to meet, while creators aspire to create a dramatic effect for their viewers. Video games, just like films, follow trends. They conform to what is acceptable at a time. In the same way, the effect they have differs, and not all personalities will change after being exposed to violence in such games.

Video Game News and the Industry Built Around Them
Karina Popa | Submitted On November 25, 2014 on 06/23/2015 at 10:39pm (UTC)
No one can deny the fact that the video gaming industry is now one of the most prolific industry on the globe. There are so many things happening, and each new day brings new events that determine the video game news area to expand and keep up.

This industry was born in the 70s, when computers first appeared. It began as a hobby for those who used computers for playing games. Then, more and more people began having their own computers, and video gaming grew as well. By the end of the decade, computer games started to attract more and more attention.

In 1974, a magazine took the liberty of covering this rising industry. Its name was Play Meter, and it included information about the entire industry. But the first magazine that covered just news from the video gaming domain appeared in the UK in 1981, and it was titled Computer and Video Games. After it, the US launched its own version, called Electronic Games.

The Internet has helped this industry grow even more by giving people access to online gaming websites. People could store more data on CDs, and even download games for their kids and themselves. And this is how the gaming industry became more than just a hobby. When an industry receives more attention, the information related to it needs to be covered in order to reach the people interested.

Nowadays, companies like Disney, Sony, Nintendo and many other are extremely popular in the world of video gaming. Not coincidentally, the gaming industry represents a big part of economy. For example, can you believe that Grand Theft Auto 4 got a larger income than Spiderman 3 in the first week of launch? How much you ask? How about $500 million? This information and other similar ones can reach people only by way of news.

There are lots of online websites that cover everything that happens in the gaming world. It doesn't matter if we are talking about tax evasion or price discounts. This helps the interested people remain updated about the latest gaming apps, software, tools or everything new that enters the market. Video games companies can successfully use such websites to better understand the market and develop more efficient strategies for expansion.

The Internet is indeed one of the best sources of news in video gaming. Lots of social networks and gaming portals offer such news a great deal of importance. The rapid evolution of the gaming news industry is based on them due to the space offered to users to comment and express their opinions related to various gaming related topics. This is a great way to support the system and encourage growth.
